Welcome to Kindergarten at Eastlakes Public School
Starting school is an exciting milestone for both children and their families. At Eastlakes Public School, we know how important it is to feel confident, supported and welcomed throughout this journey.
We warmly welcome you into our school community in the year leading up to your child’s start. Our comprehensive Transition to School Program, along with parent and carer workshops and school visits ensures that every family feels connected and every child feels ready.
Our transition activities are designed to help your child build familiarity, make friends, meet teachers and begin their school journey with joy and confidence. They also provide opportunities for parents and carers to learn about school life, ask questions and feel supported every step of the way.
Read the Getting ready for primary school guide for detailed tips and checklists.
Before Your Child Starts Kindergarten
Enrolment Interview
Before your child begins school, all families meet with our K-2 Assistant Principal. This interview is an opportunity to share important information about your child, such as:
- medical conditions or allergies
- learning or support needs
- family circumstances that may influence your child’s transition to school
This helps us ensure every child feels safe, supported and included as they begin their school journey.
Kindergarten Transition and Information Sessions
Our transition sessions are designed to help children feel familiar and confident. During these visits, children can:
- meet their teachers and future classmates
- explore classrooms and playgrounds
- practise simple daily routines
Parents and carers are also invited to take part in information sessions where you can learn about daily schedules, uniforms, lunches, communication and what to expect in the first weeks of school.
If you require an interpreter, please let us know and we will arrange support.
See our transition to school program page for further information.

Getting Ready at Home
You can help your child feel confident and prepared for school by encouraging independence and practising simple routines. Try:
- packing and unpacking their school bag
- dressing themselves and practising hygiene, including handwashing
- following simple routines at home, such as tidying up or organising belongings
Small steps at home build big confidence for the first day of Kindergarten. For more advice, see the Getting ready for primary school guide.
What to Expect in Kindergarten
Learning and Development
Kindergarten at Eastlakes Public School follows the NSW curriculum, with learning experiences designed to build strong foundations across key learning areas, including:
- English and Mathematics
- Creative Arts (visual arts, dance, drama and music)
- Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
- Science and Technology
- Human Society and its Environment (history and geography)
Learning through play is an important part of our approach. It supports children to develop social and emotional skills, build confidence, practise problem-solving and foster a lifelong love of learning.
Daily Routines
During the first weeks of Kindergarten, children learn simple routines such as:
- morning arrival procedures
- snack and lunch breaks
- lining up and moving between spaces
- using bubblers and managing their belongings
Teachers support children every step of the way as they settle in. Practising small skills at home can make these new routines feel familiar and comfortable.
Best Start Assessment
At the beginning of the year, all Kindergarten students participate in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one conversation and activity that helps teachers understand your child’s early literacy and numeracy skills.
It is not a test, and no preparation is needed. The information simply helps us personalise learning and support each child as they begin their school journey.
