Frequently Asked Questions

Starting school is a big and exciting step for both children and their families. To help you feel confident and prepared, we’ve put together answers to the questions parents and carers ask most often about beginning Kindergarten at Eastlakes Public School.

1. What age does my child need to be to start Kindergarten?

In New South Wales, children can start Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if they turn 5 on or before 31 July of that year. By law, children must be enrolled in school by their 6th birthday.

2. How do I enrol my child?

You can enrol online through the NSW Department of Education enrolment portal. Once submitted, our school office will contact you to arrange an enrolment interview.

3. What is the Transition to School Program?

Our four-week program helps children and families feel confident before the school year. Children visit classrooms for play and activities, while parents attend workshops to learn about school routines, support services and how learning works in Kindergarten.

Head to the Transition to School Program page to find out more.

4. Does my child need to wear the school uniform to Transition?

No. Comfortable clothes are fine. Uniforms are needed from the first day of school.

5. How can I help my child get ready for school?

At home, you can practise:

6. What will my child learn in Kindergarten?

Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children learn English, Mathematics, Creative Arts, PDHPE, Science and Technology, History and Geography, with lots of learning through hands-on materials and play.

7. What is the Best Start Assessment?

This is a friendly, one-on-one conversation between teacher and child in the first weeks of school. It helps teachers understand your child’s early literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and requires no preparation.

8. What should I pack for school each day?

We recommend to label everything:

9. Can I stay with my child on the first day?

Families are welcome to walk their child to the playground and join us for a welcome assembly. Once settled, teachers will guide the children to class. Quick goodbyes help children adjust more easily.

10. What if my child becomes upset?

This is perfectly normal. Our staff are experienced in supporting children through separation anxiety. Most children settle quickly with gentle reassurance and routine.

11. How will the school communicate with families?

We use Sentral, Audiri, newsletters and website updates. Teachers also share regular classroom information.

12. What time does school start and finish?

School starts at 9.00 am and finishes at 3.00 pm. Students should arrive between 8.30–8.55 am.

13. Is there before and after school care?

Yes. Our local Out of School Hours Care (OOSH) service offers before- and after-school care. Head to the ELOOSH page for more details.

14. What support is available if my child needs additional support?

NSW public schools are inclusive and offer a range of support for children with diverse learning, development, health and wellbeing needs. Every child is different, and schools work in partnership with families to understand each child and plan for a smooth transition.

If you think your child might need additional support, it’s best to contact your local public school as early as possible; two years before kindergarten. This gives the school time to work with you to plan the right support for your child.
