English as an Additional Language / Dialect (EAL/D)

English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) The EAL/D program at Eastlakes School caters for students from language backgrounds other than English. The program provides support for all levels of English ability from New Arrivals to near native speakers.

Support is provided either in class; assisting with the class learning program, or by withdrawing individuals or small groups for targeted English instruction.

New Arrivals come to school either literate in their first language, or with beginning levels of literacy. The focus for these children is to build their English vocabulary, using their first language as a springboard into English. Support is also provided to assist with pronunciation of English words, and reading and writing. For these children the aim is to provide them with Basic Interpersonal Communications Skills (BICS) so they can confidently communicate and socialise with their peers and the wider community.

Children with emerging to developing English have different needs to New Arrivals. They are supported with reading and writing, listening and speaking, and grammar and punctuation. The aim is for these children to develop skills in Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) so they can access the skills and information required for academic learning.
